Halligan, James J. April 5, 1943 - September 11, 2022

James J. Halligan

James Halligan, 79, of Bronxville, NY passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on September 11, 2022.

Jim was born in the Bronx, to Bridget and Patrick Halligan on April 5, 1943 and raised in Highbridge. Jim is survived by his wife, Patricia and daughters Sheila and Colleen (fiancé Michael). He is predeceased by his brothers John and Kevin and is survived by his brother Patrick and sisters Kathleen Murray and Marie Heaney and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim will be remembered as a husband, father, brother, uncle, friend and teacher who loved history, bird watching, Irish music, traveling, and telling a good story.

Jim was a dedicated teacher for nearly forty years with the New York City Board of Education. An avid bird watcher, Jim combined his passion for worldwide travel in order to find a rare bird. As a history buff, he loved nothing more that to “educate” others on his latest findings if you had an hour to listen. Loving all types of music, especially the bagpipes, Jim was a proud Irish American.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Swim Across America – www.swimacrossamerica.org/goto/JimHalligan  which is dedicated to funding cancer research.

If you wish to send a check to Swim Across America, please note Jim’s name in the memo line.

    Dear Pat and girls,
We send our deepest sympathies. We will miss our friend and all the times and trips we had together. How could we forget when you first brought Jim to Canton and we had two feet of snow to introduce him to the north country. Love the picture.

It was my honor to have known Jim for well over 60 years. He was a good friend. I know, just from occasional observation that he was an even better husband and father.. We shared a career in education, a topic on which Jim could get quite passionate; he was a dedicated teacher whose commitment went beyond the classroom. He was also very proud of his Irish heritage and could wax eloquent on the contributions of the Irish to America, Pat, Sheila, Coleen, I hope that memories of Jim’s smile and his love for you all will become a source of comfort and even joy.

Dear Patty, Sheila and Colleen, Jim was one of a kind and a very special guy. I admired him as a father and as a good husband. Both Patty and I are so sorry for your loss. Who would have thought the a guy that loved Jazz Music and Bird Watching would have been a match for you. May he rest in peace.

Pat, Sheila and Colleen, Your final tribute to your husband and father was wonderful. He was a fantastic man, and Scott and I will miss our talks with Jim around the birds in my yard. We shared many a discussion about them. We know he will be so missed by you and we will remember him with such fondness forever. He is as we say “flying high with the birds” –

    Dear Patti, Sheila and Colleen,
We Flanagans down south didn’t get to share as much time with Jim as we would have liked, but the time we had with him was always a blessing and a good time. I’ll never forget how kind he was when he took my 12 year old self birdwatching at the crack of dawn. He was a pretty neat guy to me, from that day on!
Clearly, his was a life well lived and he was a devoted husband who helped raise two amazing young women.
    Sending all our love,
    Eileen and Carmine
