Alice Annette Gannon, née Kerins, passed away on Saturday, July 30th, 2022 at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx after a long battle with a respiratory illness. She was 64 years old. Alice grew up in the Woodlawn section of The Bronx, where she met many of her childhood-turned-lifelong friends. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree from SUNY Oswego, she spent a semester abroad in Japan, raised a family in Crestwood, New York, and went on to receive her Master’s degree from Mercy College in Advanced Education. Before her extensive career as a teacher in both Art and Social Studies throughout Westchester County, she ran as the Democratic Candidate for New York State Senate’s 34th District in 1986. Alice would continue to keep her political ideals a strong influence in her life, encouraging anyone she knew to be mindful of the power of voting.
Those who knew Alice could tell you just how much she loved the 1960s British pop group, ‘The Beatles’, and she carried her infectious love of music with her throughout her life. She also loved scrapbooking, drinking tea, mystery stories, and watching ‘Jeopardy’. As the 10th child among 11 siblings, she could frequently be found laughing and spending time with her ever-growing family.
She is survived by her daughters, Meghan Mertens, age 35, and Alison Gannon, age 28, as well as siblings Hughie, Mary Beth (Sheibar), Patti (Dauer), and Sean.
Visitation services will be held on Friday August 5, 2022 from 4 – 7pm EST at McGrath & Son Funeral Home in Bronxville, NY. Funeral mass will take place Saturday August 6, 2022 at 9:45am EST at St. Joseph’s Church in Bronxville, NY, just across the street. Flowers may be sent to the funeral home located at 20 Cedar Street, Bronxville, NY 10708.
