Duffy, John J November 20, 1929 - October 12, 2021

May the Lord shine his face upon our Dad, John James Patrick Duffy, who left this world on October 12, 2021. John, known to his friends as “Duff,” his brothers and sisters and the Duffy relatives as “Jackie” or “Uncle Jack,” as “Johnny” to his wife Carolyn (deceased-January 31, 2007) and the Block relatives, and to his grandchildren as “PopPop or Grandpa,” was born in Manhattan on November 20, 1929 to John and Mary Duffy. He was the oldest of five siblings and grew up in Astoria, Queens. John served in the military during the Korean War and attained the rank of sergeant. He played semi-professional football which served as the foundation for his lifelong love of sports – his particular favorites were football and hockey. He later moved to Long Island where he met and married his wife, Carolyn (Block) Duffy, and raised three now-adult children John Walter (Marianne), Colleen (Timothy) and Danette (Lee). He was the consummate salesman and spent most of his career at Macy’s which allowed his family to enjoy the employee discount. John was devoted to God, family and service to the community. He was actively involved in parish activities at Our Lady of Loretto in Hempstead and St. Martha’s in Uniondale for most of his adult life including raising money for each parish by volunteering at Bingo for more than 30 years and helping those in need through his activities with the Society of St. Vincent de Paul for even longer.John was also an active volunteer with NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), an organization dedicated to building better lives for the mentally ill and their families. John always had a ready smile and a helping hand. He will be remembered for his love of birthdays, sports, and his family as well as his devotion to the Catholic Church and his generosity of spirit. He leaves behind his three children and their spouses, as well as eight grandchildren John Luis (Emily), Jessica, Kira (Sarah), Céili, Lauren, Augustine, Patrick and Shannon Rose and his great-granddaughter Marigold, as well as his sisters Rose (deceased-Ed), Eileen (deceased-Jack) and Kathleen (deceased-John) and his brothers Donald (Barbara) and Kevin (Margaret), and a wealth of nieces, nephews, and extended family members of the Duffy clan as well as cherished friends. We will miss his laughter, smile and love.
