Timothy S. Collins—Bronx Pastor, Hospital Chaplain and Community Activist

 Reverend Monsignor Timothy S. Collins died peacefully on Saturday August 22, 2015 at the Cardinal O’Connor Clergy residence in Bronx, New York. He was 86 years old.  Msgr. Collins was born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan to John Timothy Collins and Dorothea Holmes. The family moved to New York City in 1931, and then to Bronxville, New York in 1938.  In 1948, Msgr. Collins graduated from the Portsmouth Priory School (now Portsmouth Abbey) in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. After graduation, he entered the Benedictine Monastery at Portsmouth Priory. Msgr. Collins engaged undergraduate studies at the College of Notre Dame, and continued his studies at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. He then returned to Portsmouth Priory where he worked with students as a teacher, track coach and dorm master.  He left Portsmouth to spend time in Abiquiú, New Mexico, at the Monastery of Christ in the Desert, a small monastery founded by two monks from Portsmouth Priory. In 1976Msgr. Collins was incardinated into the Archdiocese of New York, and began his work in the Bronx. He became deeply involved in the community and served as an active member of the community board during a time in which much of the Bronx was recovering from extreme poverty. He served as Chaplain at Bronx Lebanon and Misericordia Hospitals. From 1982-1986 Msgr. Collins was Pastor of the Parish of Saints Philip and James. From 1986-1994 he was Pastor of St. Barnabas Church, where he had overall responsibility for the parish and its elementary and high schools. His installation as Monsignor took place in 1990. In 1994, Msgr. Collins became Pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Manhattan (the Mother Seton Shrine). Monsignor Collins was a beloved man of the Church, and of his large extended family.  He was pre-deceased by his sister, Marianna Collins Tostanoski of Scarsdale, NY.  He is survived by his brother, Richard Collins of Vero Beach, FL, and twelve nieces and nephews: DeeDee Tostanoski of Alexandria, VA; Edward Tostanoski, Jr. (Teresa) of Mt. Kisco, NY; Timothy Tostanoski (Maureen) of Danbury, CT; Katie Frosinini (Riccardo) of Florence, Italy; Jean Tostanoski (Edward Higham) of Armonk, NY; Nancy Tostanoski (Brian Hogan) of Scarsdale, NY; Patty Tostanoski of Suffern, NY; Jacqueline Hullar (John) of Menlo Park, CA; Richard Collins, Jr. (Jennifer Blessing) of Brooklyn, NY; John Timothy Collins (Kathy) of Glen View, IL; Stephen Collins (Julie Sunderland) of Omaha, NE; and Christopher Collins (Judy) of New York, NY; and 26 grand-nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Thursday, August 27th at the Fred H. McGrath & Son Funeral Home, Bronxville, NY from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm. On Friday, August 28th, at St. Barnabas Church, Bronx, NY there will be a viewing from 8:30am to 9:30am, followed at 10:00am by The Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated by His Eminence Cardinal Timothy Dolan. Interment will take place at Holy Mount Cemetery, Eastchester, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to NY Catholic Foundation, Archdiocese of NY, Egan Pavilion, 101 First Ave, New York, NY 10022.
