Ledwyna “Wynn” Gertrude Qualey Camas

September 25, 1933 – November 8, 2021

Born and raised in the Rogers Park section of Chicago. Wynn was a graduate of Mundelein College. Wynn spoke proudly of her first job at the city’s Merchandise Mart. While there, her boss encouraged her to have dinner with a dashing young salesman who was visiting town. Six days later, Walter Camas proposed, and shortly thereafter, Wynn was whisked away to New York by the love of her life. After a short stay in Bronxville, Walter and Wynn discovered the tight-knit community of Crestwood… and another lifelong love affair began. Walter and Wynn not only survived but thrived in spite of their differences: Chicago Cubs vs. the Bronx Bombers, politics, appropriate gardening attire, to name a few. They were married for nearly 50 years and raised four children: Anne, Paul, Virginia “Ginny” and Walter. Family and faith were all-important to Wynn, which is why a home within walking distance to church – where the Angelus signaled both lunch and a call in to dinner, no matter where the kids were became part of the fabric of our lives.

Wynn was a mainstay at the 6:45 am mass at Annunciation Church, taught CCD for decades and volunteered for years with the Missionaries of Charity in the South Bronx. Wynn was a voracious reader (often juggling more than two books at once), a NY Times Crossword Puzzle fanatic and never turned down a game of cards (especially Bridge and Hearts). She loved to host or attend a party, listen to Frank Sinatra (while singing at the top of her lungs), see a Broadway show, enjoy late afternoons at the beach in Rehobeth with her life-long friends or attend a game at Shultz Field cheering on the kids. Family and friends were all she needed.

Wynn leaves her daughter Anne and stepdaughter Colleen Phelan, of Cape Cod, MA; her son Paul, his wife Joanne, and their children Aidan, Martin, Owen and Gabriel of Woodlawn, NY; her daughter Ginny, her husband Bernie Miller, and their children Sophie and Walter of Ballston Spa, NY; her son Walter, his wife Christina, and their children Matthew, Erin, Allison, Brian and Sean of Crestwood, NY. Wynn was a daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, friend, and the proudest Gramma ever.

The Draddy family sends their condolences and prayers for one of the great woman of Crestwood. Our parents never had more fun than when they were together with your parents. They both were a wonderful part of our childhood and we know there is a fabulous party in heaven with the Crestwood crew.

Mrs. Camas once told me a story about a box of chocolate (Russell Stover, or a Whitman Sampler) which she was waiting to open until after lent. She left this gift to herself on her dresser for a long 40 days.
When Easter arrived she told me how she went to lift the box, and while it appeared to be still wrapped in the cellophane wrapping, the bottom had been cut away with a razor blade (by one Mr.Camas…who over the course of lent ate one piece of chocolate each day…knowing on Easter he would be not only caught but with great fanfare). I can still hear Mrs Camas say “WALTER!”.

I am so blessed that Aunt Wynn and Uncle Walter were and always will be part of my life. Having four children, they still found time to spend time with and care about me. And that enhanced my life more than I could ever explain. I have so many wonderful and joyful memories of times spent with all of you laughing and always enjoying a great meal! You are an extraordinary family and am so lucky to be a part of it. Walter and Wynn truly lived out their faith through their love, thoughtfulness, kindness, and generosity. Their example inspired me to dedicate my career to helping others because I know firsthand the power of an outstretched hand. Thank you Camas family for being awesome.

When I heard about Aunt Wynn’s passing, I was heartbroken. I have so many happy memories of her and Uncle Walter at our family gatherings. Anne, Paul, Ginny, and Walter, Mom touched many lives. She is looking down on all of us now. Be comforted to know she was united with God in Heaven and is joyously reunited with Dad.
Aunt Wynn was one of my favorite aunts. She will always be remembered for her wit, charm, and good humor. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
