Barbella, Catherine passed away on December 10, 2009 after a brief illness.  She was born October 30, 1917 and was a proud lifelong resident of the Bronx.  She was the devoted wife of Theodore Barbella who predeceased her, and the loving mother of Geraldine Dolan, Butch (Jo Anne) Barbella, Peter (Trina Tiffany) Barbella, Cathy (Steven) Petrone.  Devoted grandmother of Marc, Michelle, Jeannine, John, David, Matthew, Lisa, Andrew and Gabriella.  Great Grandmother of Alexa, Alana, Madeline and LeighAnne.  She enjoyed two careers as a seamstress and fulfilled the dream of being a secretary in her senior years working in a local podiatry office until she was 85.  She enjoyed cooking wonderful meals for her family, reading, playing games with her grandchildren and shopping in her beloved Belmont section of the Bronx.  She will be remembered for her open and kind heart, loving concern and selflessness. Burke, Francis L. a former resident of Scarsdale and parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for fifty three years, died on Sunday, September 13, 2009 at Stamford Hospital after a courageous battle to recover from several strokes.  He was 83 years old.
Mr. Burke was the son of Helena and Michael Burke.  He attended Danbury High School in Danbury, Connecticut and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Connecticut State Teachers College in New Britain, Connecticut.
His wife of forty-six years, Rosemary McCormack Burke died in 2003.
Mr. Burke enjoyed a career as an industrial buyer and worked for many years for Kraft Foods and Textron Lycoming and subsequently for Cigna.  After he retired, and was he involved in many parish activities at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and volunteered at the Board of Elections.
Mr. Burke was loved by his family, his friends and neighbors.
He is survived by his daughter, Christine Cesare, his son Michael Burke, son-in-law, Edward Cesare, daughter-in-law, Kathleen Burke, four grandsons, Michael Burke, Jr., Nicholas Cesare, Matthew Burke and Nolan Burke and many loving nieces and nephews.  His sisters, Leona Henry, Helena Burke and Alice Gavell predeceased him.
Visiting hours will be held at McGrath Funeral Home, Bronxville, on Thursday, September 17th from 2pm to 4pm and from 6pm to 9pm. A funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Friday, September 18th at 10:30am  at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Scarsdale.

Byrne, Stella Vaccaro past peacefully at St. Cabrini’s Nursing Home on Friday morning the 31st of July in the year of Our lord 2009 Leaving her loving family for a short while to join Her Loving Husband John J. Byrne who past back on the 15th of January 1986. Stella was survived by eleven of her twelve children; with eldest daughter Lynda awaiting her in the presence of Our Lord.A fruitful Twenty-one Grandchildren and five Great-Grandchildren also survived her. CANZANO, ROBERT J., of  Yonkers, NY on July 22, 2009.  Beloved husband of the late Bernice.  Loving  father of Roberta Canzano Probst.  He was an active member of St. Eugene’s Parish.  He gained the nickname

Joseph Patrick Cotter, a retired New York City Police Lieutenant and longtime Westchester County resident, died of congestive heart failure at his home in Yonkers on Sunday morning, December 27.   He will always be remembered for his endearing wit and love of New York City.   He was 79 years old. Mr. Cotter was born on March 18, 1930 in the Bronx, New York to Henrietta and Thomas Cotter.  He attended New York City public schools and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 during the Korean Conflict.  After an Honorable Discharge as a Corporal in the Military Police  serving in Germany, he pursued a career in New York City law enforcement following two older brothers.   Achieving one of the highest test scores for NYC Patrolman, he entered the Police Department in 1955, progressed over the years to the rank of Lieutenant and retired after 25 years of active service across NYC, including Greenpoint, Parkchester and Harlem.   While a policeman, he matriculated at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, where he earned a BA degree.   He retired from the NYPD in 1980.    He successfully pursued a number of second careers which included security management; he also became a member of the Screen Actors Guild during his brief film career in Hollywood. Joe, also known as “Silk”, was a loving father and grandfather and is survived by his three children, Joseph W. Cotter and his wife Lydia of New York City,  William T. Cotter of Jakarta, Indonesia, Dianne L. Ledingham and her husband, Bill, of Wellesley, Massachusetts, and also by his long-time companion, Francine Damsky.   He was one of seven children and is also survived by his sister, Ellen Burton, his twin sister Margaret Kold,  his ex-wife of 26 years, Diane Cotter Liesching, his five beloved grandchildren:  Lauren, Christie and Will Ledingham,  Liddy and William Cotter, and eleven nieces and nephews.   He was predeceased by his four brothers: John, Thomas, Raymond and Robert Cotter. McGrath & Son Funeral Home, 20 Cedar Street,  Bronxville, NY from 6-9 pm, Wednesday, December 30th.   The funeral mass will be at Annunciation Church, 470 Westchester Avenue, Crestwood, NY at 10:00 am Thursday, December 31st.   He will be buried at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY, a home run away from Babe Ruth’s gravesite.

Creux, Ilda M. wife of the late Silvio Creux, mother of the late Andre Creux, passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at the age of 97.  Born in Valpelline, Italy, and a resident of Bronxville for over 40 years, she was the proprietor of Ilda Marie Fashions in Bronxville, an active member of the Bronxville Women’s Club and the Legion of Mary and taught Italian classes at the Lake Isle senior center.  She is survived by her grandson, Jason Creux.  Calling hours at The Fred H. John P. Cullen, 52, of Bristol, CT, passed away August 26, 2009, with his loving wife, Kim and daughters, Jamie and Kara, by his side.  As anyone who knew John or even had just a brief encounter with him quickly realized, John was larger than life.  He was a man of great intellect with an unparalleled work ethic who was undaunted by any challenge, a man with a passion for all that was good in the world and who possessed a clear sense of right and wrong, and a man who valued family beyond measure.  John kept us all grounded and made us focus on the truly important things in our lives.  He was a man of unlimited generosity who made us better for having known him.
John was born July 30, 1957 to John and Ellen Cullen who raised him in Bronxville, NY with his sisters Nancy, Kathy, Carolyn, Laurie, and Rosemary.  John graduated from Fordham Prep in 1975 and Cornell University in 1979.  He and Kim lived briefly in Ohio before settling in Connecticut where John established and operated Hoss Valley Restorations, specializing in older home restorations.  After the birth of his cherished girls, John turned much of his attention to raising Jamie and Kara, to rebuilding their home of 28 years in Bristol, and to expanding and improving their home and property in the Catskill Mountains in NY.  John is survived by his father and sisters, many beloved nieces and nephews, and grand nephew. He will be dearly missed by hundreds of friends and family including so many who live with John's handy work - a constant reminder of a man who gave so much to so many. 
Memorial services will be held at Fred H. McGrath & Son in Bronxville, NY on Saturday, August 29, 2009.

John DiGianni passed away on March 23, 2009 after a brief illness at the age of 86. He was born in the Bronx on August 8, 1922 to Antonio and Luisa DiGianni. A veteran of World War II, John was an accomplished artist and enjoyed a successful career in graphic and package design at Gianninoto Associates in NYC. His many creative contributions to brand imagery/ package design benefited an international range of top-tier marketers and brands—Marlboro, Bacardi, Lipton, 7-11, Irish Mist Liqueur, Lucky Strike and numerous others. Though he thrived in the commercial design arena, his natural artistic flair stemmed from his innate talent as a fine artist. The distinctive architectures of his designs endure. John was a “man’s man,”[a sterling member of America’s greatest generation], always concerned and devoted to his family and above all to his cherished wife Phyllis whom he leaves behind after 62 years of marriage. He also leaves behind his loving children, John A. Di Gianni and Carrie & Tom La Sala, grandchildren, Thomas, Erica and Adam and his sister Lydia Sclafani. He is predeceased by his brother Michael Di Gianni and sister Prudence Valvo. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date, with the time and place to be announced. DRAKE, WILLIAM, “Billy” formerly of Crestwood, NY passed away on May 22, 2009 after a long illness. He was 63. Billy attended Annunciation Grammar School in Crestwood and Roosevelt High School in Yonkers. He worked as a cook for many years in various restaurants throughout Westchester County . He was a good-natured soul who loved sports and was blessed with a terrific sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by his countless friends. Fulton, Eugene Ralph, Jr., of Crestwood, passed away on Sept. 17, 2009. Mr. Fulton was born on April 1, 1919 in the Bronx and moved to Crestwood where he resided for 56 years. He is survived by his beloved Dorothy, his wife of 63 years. He was the devoted father of Eugene R. III (Kathy), Dennis (Jane), Maureen (James Liggio) and Kevin (Suzanne) and loving grandfather of Amy Eades, Timothy, Colleen Denema, Gregory, Kevin Jr., Annie and Brian. He was proud to be a great-grandfather to Gabriella and Madeline Eades, the latter of whom was born on his 90th birthday. His brother Charles predeceased him in 1980. He received an honorable discharge from the US Navy in October 1945 after serving five years aboard a destroyer during WWII. He was Vice President of the Coughlin Group, Inc. in Larchmont, NY, where he continued to work until age 85. For 45 years he was a Westchester County, NY State and USA track and field official. He was also one of the founding fathers of the Westchester County Track and Field Officials Assoc. His love of track and field was passed on to his sons and grandchildren. He was active in many local community groups including the Westchester Putnam Council Boy Scouts of America, the American Legion, and the Larchmont Rotary. A dedicated communicant and supporter of the Church of the Annunciation, he found great comfort in his faith. His loquacious nature was his trademark and he loved to be around people. PETER P. GALLOWAY, Sr., 66 of Mount Vernon died at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville after a short illness. His children Molly, Peter and John were at his side. Peter was born on August 31, 1941 in New York City to The Honorable John H. and Mary Philips Galloway.  Peter attended high school at Archbishop Stepinac in White Plains, and is a graduate of Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York and Fordham University Law School. Prior to his retirement, Peter was an insurance inspector for ISO.  Earlier in his life, he had practiced law in a private practice in Westchester County.  Peter was a past member of the Larchmont Yacht Club where he served as the Commodore.  He also served as the president of the father’s association at both Good Counsel Academy and Iona Preparatory School.  Peter loved watching sporting events, particularly his beloved New York teams. Peter was predeceased by his parents.  Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Molly and Tim Hegeman of Cary, NC, his son Peter of New York City, and his son and daughter-in-law John and Christy of Washington, D.C., five grandchildren, and his former wife Denise Galloway of Cary, NC.  He also leaves two brothers, John of Scarsdale, NY and David of Rochester, NY, a nephew, nieces, cousins and many friends. GRAY, Rockhill, 89, died peacefully at Lawrence Hospital on October 14, 2009 after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette T. Gray of Bronxville, NY; children James B. Gray of Mt. Vernon NY, William M. Todd III of Cambridge MA, Ellen Wiley Todd of Washington DC, Sarah E. Todd of Los Angeles CA; three grand-daughters and one great-granddaughter. A 1949 graduate of The University of Cincinnati School of Law, he practiced law at Bosworth, Gray and Fuller and was elected to seven 4-year terms as Eastchester Town Justice. MONCALIERI, ISABEL R.; a lifelong local and Yonkers resident died on June 1, 2009 at the age of 91.  She was born on March 1, 1918 in Bronxville to Libratore and Marie Pastore Rich.  One of seven children, her parents were clothing designers.  Mrs. Moncalieri was a graduate of  Tuckahoe High School, class of 1935 and finished at the top of her class.  Although, granted a partial scholarship to the College of New Rochelle, the economic times precluded this.  She decided to attend business school in Manhattan for two years, and went to work for a group that included a lawyer, a writer and a photographer to the celebrities of that era.  Subsequently, she decided against being a commuter, when the Burroughs  Wellcome Company in Tuckahoe had the first opening for a women in seven years.  Her work consisted primarily of filling narcotic orders for physicians and assisting the industrial psychologist in his work on efficiency data. Mrs. Moncalieri interest in the arts extended to playing the violin for 12 years, were she rose to first chair and concert master and occasionally, conductor.  She was also skilled in all types of dance, starting with classical ballet at an early age, graduating to toe shoes at age 6.  Her range extended to tap, ballroom, Latin, jive and interpretive forms such as the Isadora Duncan style and jazz. She continued doing recitals and appearing in company shows until the age of 25.  Mrs. Moncalieri was married on August 8, 1943 to Albert C. Moncalieri of Yonkers at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Mt. Vernon.  He was a chemist at Burroughs Wellcome and later a businessman.  Albert died in 2003.  Some years later they moved to their home in Yonkers with their children.  Isabel enjoyed being a homemaker.  She was an accomplished baker, and cook of French, Northern Italian and American Cuisine, and enjoyed to entertain. Isabel had a sense of style which included many dresses of her own creation.  As a tutor she saw to the pre-school learning of her children, providing them with skills that were far beyond the first grade level.  She provided the basis for lifelong learning, and the love of reading.  Isabel Moncalieri is survived by her children, Allan, of Yonkers and Sheryl (William) Walker, of North Salem, two grandchildren, Suzanne Walker (Paul) Rochford, of Brewster and Rita Walker,of Jersey City, NJ, and a great grandchild Kaylee Rochford.  She is also survived by a sister Clorinda Nardi, of Cortlandt Manor.  Brothers:  William, Ralph, Michael, Frank and James died earlier.    Calling hours at the Fred H. Morrison, Daniel W. Jr., a longtime Yonkers resident, died peacefully at White Plains Hospital on July 4, 2009, surrounded by his four children, his brother, and his sister-in-law.  Daniel worked in the Westchester County Dept. of Planning, and previously at Union Carbide as a real estate controller. Daniel was born on May 23, 1926 in New York City to Daniel and Mildred Morrison. After attending Roosevelt High School, Daniel entered Bowdoin College in Maine, where he majored in economics and played varsity football, basketball, and baseball.  He also received an M.B.A. from New York University.  After graduating, he served with the U.S. Army in the Korean War. On June 22, 1957, Daniel married Kathleen Winkle at the Church of St. Thomas Moore in Manhattan.  They raised four children together, and became active parishioners in the Church of the Annunciation in Crestwood, N.Y. Daniel will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his selflessness, his joy and laughter, and his love of life. He is survived by his sons, Daniel Morrison of Westport, Connecticut, Matthew Morrison of Alexandria, Virginia, and Neil Morrison of Westfield New Jersey, his daughter Patricia Morrison of Westbury, New York, his brother, Robert, of Brunswick, Maine, and their families. NISTA, GLADYS E. of Bronxville, NY peacefully passed away on March 11, 2009. Gladys was born and raised in Mount Vernon and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School. She married the late Joseph J. Nista Sr., who was a prominent lawyer and also served as Judge for the Village of Tuckahoe.  Gladys worked as a legal secretary and was a committed and hard working homemaker.  After the passing of her husband, Gladys served as matriarch over an ever growing family, welcoming and inspiring seven grandchildren and nine (and counting) great grandchildren.
Gladys was an inspiration to her children Grace DiBattista (Anthony), John Nista (Elizabeth), Joseph Nista (Carol) and Howard Nista (Melody).
Gladys’ spirit encouraged her grandchildren Carolyn, Anthony, Joe, Ann Marie, Larry, Jim and Cathy and their spouses.
To her nine great grandchildren Gladys was affectionately known as “Granny”. Ryan, Marissa, Mickey, Kerianne, Caity, Danielle, Michelle, Amelia, and Leila all loved their Granny more than anything.
Visitation will be at McGrath Funeral Home in Bronxville, NY on Friday March 13th from 2 - 5 pm and 7 - 9 pm. Salvati, Umberto; of Yorktown Heights, passed away Thursday, July 9, 2009, at Hudson Valley Hospital.  He was born June 4, 1920 in Mt. Vernon, NY to James Salvati and Micheline Russo. A printer by trade, Bert worked primarily as a line-o-type operator for several newspapers, magazines, and other publications. He lived in Crestwood, NY for 35 years before moving to Brewster, then to Yorktown Heights for the past 16 months. During WWII, he served with the 751st Field Artillery Battalion in the European Theater, also with the 1st, 3rd, 7th and 9th armies, and received the Bronze Star among other service honors. Bert was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Jane, and his brother Rudy. He is survived by children Robert, Michael, Patricia and Paul, 11 grand and 2 great grandchildren, and sisters Anne, Agnes and Rose. Visitation will be held at the Fred H. SEARLES, ARTHUR LANGLEY (Lee) died May 7, 2009, in Bronxville, N.Y. He was born on August 8, 1920 in Nashua, New Hampshire, to Georgine (Stemmermann) and Arthur Langley Searles Sr., of Milford, New Hampshire. He lived in Milford until his graduation from high school in 1938. He was graduated from New York University with his Bachelor’s of Science degree in 1942, and his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1946. While at NYU, he won the 1941 award for Best Presenter of a Scientific Lecture from the Draper Chemical Society. He taught chemistry at NYU before becoming a Professor of Chemistry at the College of Mount Saint Vincent and Manhattan College, where he taught for 30 years. In 1977 he won the Bene Merente Medal for Outstanding Teaching at the College of Mount Saint Vincent.

While at NYU he began publishing a science fiction periodical, Fantasy Commentator, which he continued to publish until 2007. The magazine gathered a loyal following in the science fiction community, and he was named the Fantasy Amateur Press Association’s Editor of the Year six times, and won an award from C.W. Post College. In addition to his role as editor, he wrote both poetry and prose under his own name and the pen name of Lee Becker.

TARPEY, MARION (Mickey); an Eastchester resident for fifty five years, died peacefully in her home early Tuesday morning. She was 90 years old. She was born on May 1, 1918 in Lincoln Hospital, Bronx, NY to Madeline Landey Harrold and her husband John. She was a graduate of Julia Richman High School in New York City and gave her class Valedictory address. Mickey met her beloved husband, Robert Tarpey, MD when they were 11 and 12 years old. They were soul mates for life despite Robert’s untimely passing in 1968. She enjoyed many active years at Leewood Golf Club, serving as chairperson of the pool and the Ladies 9 holer golf group. She was an avid member of the ladies bowling league. Mr. Lincoln F. Warren, a life long resident of Bronxville, died on May 16, 2009, at the age of 92. He was born in 1916 to Lida P. Ferguson and Harry E. Warren in Cambridge, Mass. He was a member of Boy Scout Troop One for many years. While attending Bronxville High School he met Else Krebs, and they were married in 1942.Warren served with the 22nd Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division of the United States Army in France and Germany from 1941 to 1945.  He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Mr. Warren was co-founder the Air National Guard 1901st Engineer Aviation Battalion. He was employed by the New York Central Railroad for 30 years, and also served as Chief of the Bronxville Auxiliary Police for several years. He served as Commander and Adjutant for both Westchester County and Post 464 in Bronxville. He was a member of the American Legion for over 60 years. Warren was predeceased by his wife, and his brother David A. Warren He is survived by his son Richard, daughters Edith Kane and Anne-Marie Warren, his sister Martha Stevens, grandchildren Greg Haake and Emily Warren, and four nephews. WEISSE, SALLY M.; 97, formerly of Bronxville, NY and Boca Raton, Fl. died at the Osborn in Rye, NY on June 4, 2009. Mrs. Weisse was born in Woodlawn, NY to Emily and Henry J. Hille. She was the beloved wife of the late Frank J. Weisse. She was the loving mother of Sally Anne Overlander, of Bronxville, NY and the late Jane Marie Dayton, of Colts Neck, NJ.
